Baby Carriers Through Cultures

Baby slings have been in vogue for ages all over the world. This is a piece of cloth that is used to tie the baby to the body of the one who takes care of the baby. The ring sling is a modification with a cloth sewn to two rings, usually made of aluminum. The head and the arm of the wearer are put through the loop of the cloth. A pocket is formed between the rings where the child is seated. Ring slings can be used to carry an infants as well as toddlers. The pouch slings are similar but without the rings. It is simply a cloth forming a pouch which is sewn into shape. The size of the pouch is adjusted with the use of clips, rings, snaps, buckles, and zippers. The seat for the child is created when the pouch is slipped over the head and shoulder.

Wraps or wraparounds or wraparound slings are longer fabric that are wrapped around the baby and the wearer and tied. The baby or the toddler is carried on the hip, back or front of the wearer. The wrap is of two types namely woven and stretchy. The stretchy wrap is made of knits as interlock or jersey. It is easy to carry the baby and is therefore popular. The woven wrap is made of woven natural fabric and comes in variety of materials, patterns and colors. Cotton is the most preferred though wool, silk, linen and hemp are also used. A piece of cloth also can be made into sling wrapping around the baby carer and the baby. There is the Chinese mei tai which is almost square piece of cloth with parallel unpadded straps at the corner. There is similarly the Korean podaegi which is a large rectangular fabric with a very long strap. There are variants of this such as Chinese bei beis, Hmong carriers, the Japanese onbuhimo, the parka or amauti of the Inuits and in almost all cultures across the world.

Stroller is yet another popular baby carrier and is in the form of seat on wheels. There are many models and designs in which they come. Baby Carriages Over The Years

An infant or a child can be carried with baby carrier which is as on-the-body carrier. The slings, backpack carrier and soft front or hip carrier are different forms of baby carrier. The older children can be carried in mei tais, frame backpack carriers, slings and hip carriers, many other types of soft carriers.

The cradleboard is derived from the Native American baby carrier where the mothers carried the baby while working or traveling. The cradle is mounted on the back straps that are attached to the head or shoulder. It is hung on the travois or a saddle when traveling. Shredded bark, moss or lichens were used to cushion the baby on the cradleboard. They were woven from twigs that are flexible such as hazel and willow or cut from flat pieces of wood. The cradle board has flat surface. The child is kept secure and tightly wrapped with the head free to move.

Ever since the Victorian era, perambulators or prams have been used in the United Kingdom. Carrycot is the modern adaptation and has a detachable body. Nowadays prams are rarely used. They are bigger and also costlier than the modern baby carrier which is sold in the market. The more comfortable and cheaper strollers are preferred.

Kids up to the age of three can be carried in strollers. It is also known as buggies. They look just like a chair or seat on wheels. There are strollers that can carry two kids. Either the kids are placed side by side or one behind the other. There are also strollers which can accommodate three kids. This is called triple stroller. A harness is used in the stroller to secure the child firmly in the stroller. The child is prevented from falling off. there are many models of strollers in the market. Make sure that the stroller does not wobble or tip. There should not be any sharp edges that can harm the baby. The screws should be covered with plastic cover so that the baby does not fiddle with them and pull them off.
